life without air water light sound
part 3
A sculpture hanging in the centre of the stage projects a slowly rotating beam of bright light.
Reflections from costumes and the performers bodies are turned into sounds which directly relate to how much light is reflected and their positions around and distance from the sculpture.
At first the performers are caught unexpectedly in the beam, the retro-reflective material of the work jackets produces loud percussive sounds. Despite attempts to evade the light, the group of performers use a strategy of removing the jacket to reveal a soft white overall decontamination suit.
Working in a choreographed collaboration, the narrative resolves as the performers form a ring surrounding the sculpture, with the sound carried in the light beam being heard as a choral composition.
