life without air water light sound
part 4
A performer makes anguished expressions and appears to be talking but nothing is heard.
A sensitive microphone picks up these vocal breathing sounds and they are recorded on a tape loop. The audience hears the sound after about a minute, but at times slowed down or speeded up.
The performer inflates silver foil sculptural shapes using bellows of the same material which can be operated by repetitive movements of hands or feet. The sound of the material moving is also picked up and recorded. The performer begins to speak in imitation of the speeded up or slowed down playback of the recordings of their own voice, which is then part of the looped sounds. A choreographed performance works towards an engulfing of the performer by the plastic wave shapes.
The microphone uses a fired clay horn which allows breathing sounds made by the performer to be picked up which the audience cannot hear. It is fragile and is suspended inside a circular covering at the front of the stage.
